  • How do we inherit traits from our parents?

 

Overview of the Lesson:

  • Introduction: genetics and inheritance patterns

  • Provocation: put up pictures of different dog breeds, then ask students what traits would you desire in a pet? what could you do to ensure your pet has those traits? (UDL principle 4.1) (Engage)

    • What is purebred? (know the genetic background of the pet) - allows students to relate genetics to a real-world topic

  • Quick Review: types of cells, chromosomes, DNA and genes (students will have previous knowledge about cell division/ basic understanding of DNA) (30–B1.4k)

  • Lesson: Introduce Mendelian Genetics and use of Punnett squares to demonstrate inheritance patterns (monohybrid/dihybrid) (Explain) (30–C2.1k, 30–C2.5k)

  • Students will work on the practice questions (some students will incorporate artistic elements to solve these questions - (UDL principle 5) (Elaborate)

  • How much do your physical traits affect your identity and your perception of self?

 

Overview of the Lesson:

  • Provocation: Show video “Is your identity given or created?" - Marcus Lyon https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-tJKGZ_xSZ0  (Engage) (UDL principle 5.1)

  • Discuss perception of yourself and what affects your identity (AB Competencies - Critical Thinking, Personal Growth and Well-Being)

  • First quarter of the class is to finish up the self-portrait.

  • Teacher introduces second portrait as part of Performance Task Part One. Students will have to partner up and sit across one another to create each other’s self-portrait – see the Performance Task for more information on the performance task (DRAWINGS-Record, Investigate A.B., Communicate A., Articulate and Evaluate C. p. 5) (AB Competencies - Collaboration)
