Day 4

BIOLOGY 30

Guiding Question(s):

  • How do we represent our familial inheritance patterns? How does that impact the way we look?

Overview of the Lesson:

  •  Introduce pedigree assignment

    • Using the data they collected about a single familial trait, students will create a family pedigree (30–C2.1s)

  • Walk through criteria needed for this assignment and provide students with checklist of all the criteria they need to meet and put it on a PowerPoint slide (UDL principle 6 & 9) (Elaborate)

  • Circulate throughout the class to informally assess student understanding

  • Exit slip: have students complete a pedigree question that requires a Punnett square to understand – this will allow teacher to address misconceptions next class

ART 30

Guiding Question(s):

  • What would you look like if you had inherited different genes?

  • If a variance in genes caused your physical body to become different, how can medium be a metaphor for genes?

  •

Overview of the Lesson:

  • Mini lesson: How Medium and Artistic style can be related to Gene Variation and Mutations.

    • Group discussion on what students have garnered from Biology regarding variance in genes and mutations. Probe students with guiding questions. (AB Competencies - Critical Thinking)

  • Provocation: Show self-portraits of Pablo Picasso at age 15 and age 56  but don't tell students the works are done by the same artist**

    • Probe students on their reactions, criticism and thoughts regarding the two.

    • Show the progression of self-portraits that Pablo Picasso had done within the span of 75 years. Highlight differences in the portraits and how the variations within them were done by the same person just in different styles and 2D mediums. (ENCOUNTERS - Sources of Images A.B. p.6)

    • Ask students to consider then how much these portraits would change if Picasso had utilized 3D mediums or mixed media. (COMPOSITIONS - Components A.B.C., Relationships 1 A., Relationships 2 B., Organizations B., p. 5-6)

  • Students should be finalizing drafts as critique will be the next day (UDL principle 6.2)
